About
Hi, I’m John Trimble, a software engineer and technical lead focused on distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and applied AI.
For nearly two decades, I’ve designed, built, and operated software across its full lifecycle. I enjoy taking an ambiguous problem, turning it into a concrete technical approach, shipping the resulting system, and continuing to improve it as requirements and real-world conditions change.
My work has ranged from backend applications and Kubernetes operators to systems for managing and scaling distributed databases. Along the way, I’ve contributed to open-source projects such as cass-operator, built internal engineering tools, mentored other engineers, and worked across product, support, customer-facing, and engineering teams to solve practical problems.
I currently serve as a technical lead for autoscaling in Astra DB Serverless. I’ve helped shape the autoscaling service from its initial design through implementation, deployment, operational support, and continued development. The system uses live metrics, forecasting, and automation to adapt database capacity to changing workloads.
I’ve also been working with large language models and agentic AI, with a focus on making these systems dependable enough for real-world use. My work includes retrieval-augmented generation, grounded citation workflows, agent evaluation, and Boardbarian, a board-game rules assistant built with LangChain and LangGraph.
What connects these areas for me is a focus on useful systems: understanding the underlying problem, choosing an appropriate technical approach, and building something that remains reliable after the initial demo.
